Join the Crew

The Kingston High School Varsity Crew was founded by the Rondout Rowing Club in 2000. The scholastic program teaches focus, responsibility and integrity in being part of a rowing crew. The crew competes with many high schools on the Hudson River and in the Hudson Valley Rowing League throughout April and May.

Scott Johnson and Nate Horowitz

Scott Johnson has been a member of the Rondout Rowing Club since 1999. He is a US Rowing Level II Certified coach and maintains his USCG Boating Safety Certification and his Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications.

Scott has been a coach of the Kingston High School Varsity Rowing program for 10 years, 8 of those as Head Coach and as such maintains his DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) Certification and “Heads Up” Concussion Certification.

Nate Horowitz has served as assistant coach under Coach Scott since spring of 2014. Nate was part of the original Rondout Rowing Youth program that began in the early 2000’s when boats were required to launch at the Kingston City dock. Since then, a dock has been graciously installed by Ron Searl at the Hudson River Maritime Museum and has allowed more access to rowing on the Rondout Creek.

Nate rowed bow seat in Franklin Pierce College’s (DII) 2005 M1v4+ & 2006 M1v8+ and has competing throughout New England. He enjoys being on the Creek as much as possible and thinks it is a huge competitive advantage always having water to row on. He is looking forward to building and coaching the next generation of Kingston High School Varsity Rowers.

Credo & Principles

KHS Crew Credo

We will make sure that everything we do or say will reflect only favorably upon ourselves, our teammates, our coaches, and Kingston High School.

We will treat our minds and bodies with respect in a fashion consistent with our role as members of the Kingston High School Varsity Crew and as a Student Athlete.

We will treat our associates with our highest respect. When we have a difficulty with anyone or with how the program is run, we will resolve it directly with the person involved or with a KHS Varsity Crew Coach.

We hold ourselves to these goals with the understanding that no person is perfect.
