Lloyd Historical Society October 5th Program: Hudson River Rowing
Monday, October 5 at 7 pm, Vineyard Commons, 300 Vineyard Avenue (Route 44/55), Highland
Marist College Crew Coach Tom Sanford brings the exciting history of the Hudson River Intercollegiate Regattas to life at the Town of Lloyd Historical Preservation Society’s (TOLHPS) monthly program. Sanford
was originally scheduled to speak in February of this year, but winter storms forced postponement of that event.
With no snowstorms in the offing this time, the audience will finally get to enjoy Sanford’s presentation, as he show artifacts, video and still pictures to illustrate his personal knowledge and great passion for the topic.
The regattas were once a big tourism draw for the area. Race day crowds brought traffic on both sides of the river to a standstill and special trains brought fans to watch. In his presentation, Sanford will also discuss the current state of rowing on the Hudson, still a popular sport, and talk about the young men and
women who crew the boats.
Sanford is director of rowing at Marist and head coach of the varsity women’s crew. Last year he helped coach the men to their 19th consecutive MAAC Championship. He is the son of the late Scott Sanford, the legendary
former head coach of men’s crew at Marist.
Tom Sanford earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 and his Juris Doctor in May 1998 from Syracuse University College of Law.
Vineyard Commons, where the October program will take place, is at 300 Vineyard Avenue, about a mile and a quarter from the Hamlet of Highland on Route 44/55, just south of the Hudson Valley Rehabilitation Center. The program is free and open to everyone. To reach the theater, turn into Vineyard Commons and follow signs to Building 6. Early arrivers get the best parking spaces. Free refreshments will be available.
